FAQ

  Frequently Asked Questions

Common Perfect Dark inquiries...

Along with some not-so frequently asked questions.

Q: Do I need an Expansion Pak to play Perfect Dark?

A: An Expansion Pak isn't necessary, but the game is quite limited without it. If you don't have a Pak, you won't be able to access the Solo Missions, and will only be able to play the Combat Simulator, and Combat Simulator Challenges.

Q: How can I choose a different character for Multiplayer? I can only choose Joanna.

A: Unless you have the N64 Expansion Pak, you'll only be able to select Joanna Dark. With the Pak, you can choose your own character, as well as the characters for computer controlled players.

Q: Can I pick up my laptop gun once I've thrown it on the wall?

A: Yes. After you've deployed your Laptop gun as a wall mounted weapon, you just have to approach it, and press "B" to pick it up, and use it as a regular weapon once more.

Q: How do you open up the special missions?

A: There are four "Special Mission" to unlock. The first, being Mr. Blonde's revenge, is unlocked after completing the game on Agent difficulty. The second, Main SOS, is unlocked after completing all levels on Special Agent. The third special level, WAR, is unlocked after beating all levels of the game on Perfect Agent. And finally, The Duel level is opened after you earn all gold medals on the training mode's firing range.

Q: Are there any bush button codes for Perfect Dark, like there were in Goldeneye?

There could very well be push button codes for Perfect Dark. But if they're anything like the Goldeneye codes, they won't be 'released' for another 3 years, or maybe even never. If I did know any, they'd be on the site.

Somehow, for Goldeneye, the 10 step button code for extra characters was discovered, or possibly even released by Rare. From there, someone (a certain Dr. Ian) searched the memory for similar patterns, and eventually found all the rest, and shared them with the world. Following this, Rare 'decided' to 'release' the push button codes.

So without the initial code to base it on, the Goldeneye codes never would probably have never been found. Rareware completely denies any existence of button codes for Perfect Dark. But, many of our favorite games have ultimate, and lengthy button codes that are never, ever released to the public...

Q: Me and my friend were trying to beat Perfect Dark again and when we both got to carrington institute, we noticed that when i played i saw Johnathan in front of carringtons office and he didnt on his game. He wasnt there for him but there for me. Do you know why?

A: Jonathan, your fellow CI operative sometimes appears to help you out in the CI Defense level. It's doesn't happen randomly...
Whether or not Jonathan appears actually depends on how you finished Area 51 Escape... If you escape on the Maian spaceship with Elvis, Jonathan stays, and is never heard from again.
But, if you let Jonathan escape in the flying saucer with Elvis and use the hoverbike to escape yourself, Jonathan will return to give you a helping hand a few missions later in the Carrington Institute.

Q: How come when you crouch twice then, while still holdin L, hold C-Down down(heh) your screen goes black? I have not found any importance for this...

A: As far as I know, it's supposed to be used to hide your position from other human opponents in multiplayer. Other than that, I haven't been able to find another use for it.

Q: How come u cant use a Gameshark in Perfect Dark? When i use a Gameshark it says the expansion pak is not detected. Is that why you don't have a gameshark section?

A: The Gameshark Pro makes use of the N64 Expansion Pak. The Expansion Pak is also needed to play the PD missions. You can play the missions, but you need a Gameshark version 3.3 and some enable codes. This made the GameShark experience rather limited, and exactly why I didn;t do much GameSharking with Perfect Dark.

Q: How do you activate the Gameshark's memory editor?

A: You need a Gameshark Pro in order to view the game's RAM with the Memory Editor. In adition to that, you also need the N64 Expansion pak.
On the final setup screen before you load the game, make sure that the Code Generator is turned ON, and press start. When playing the game, press the Gameshark Button (the small black button on the front of the Gameshark) to enter into the Code Generator, and Memory Editor.

Q: In the Challenge section, you talk about those lucky 'head shots'. Is there a way to get a head shot easier than aiming manually?

A: Everyone has their own strategy to fit their playing style. I find it easiest to aim with the top and bottom C buttons. It's tough at first, but it's much more accurate for moving targets once you get used to it.

Q: Why can't I use Cheats and advance to the next mission?

A: You're not able to cheat to complete a mission, because it would make the game too easy. Anything that you do while cheating is for entertainment value only, so you can't complete missions or earn cheats while cheating.

Q: How the hell do you kill the Skedar leader? I have beaten every level but cannot get past that one? What am I missing? Jo says something about cutting off the head and the body will die? Does that mean I need to cut off the head? What about Elvis' message about destroying some of the actual shrine? What am I supposed to destroy? Can you please help me?

A: Shoot the Skedar Leader, so he retreats to his platform. You need to destroy the giant spikes that are behind that platform. Shoot the four smaller spikes on the side first, and once they're gone, shoot the giant one in the middle. Once you damage that one, it will fall and kill the Skedar Leader.

Q: With the All Guns in Solo cheat why dont you get the slayer in most levels?

A: Rare took the Slayer weapon out of missions, because it glitched up the game if you flew out of bounds. They could have simply made the rocket self destruct like in the multiplayer Temple, but keeping the weapon out of these missions completely was just an easier shortcut.

Q: The "Grid" level in PD - How do I play it or get it because I luv the Matrix and as ive said in my past mails have tried to reanact it .

A: You need to complete 11 of the preset Combat Simulator challenges to unlock the Grid arena.

Q: I have such trouble fighting BlondeSim in Challenge 11 any tips?

A: One trick for beating the harder simulants, is to take them down as soon as they round a corner. Watching your radar, you can see when they're about to enter a room. They often hesitate for a second to take aim. If you've anticipated their move, you can kill them as soon as they appear in your screen.
As always in King of the Hill scenario, it's easiest to capture a hill by knowing the arena, and the fastest possible way to get to the next hill.

Q: In the Combat Simulator, what percentage do you have to have to get the accuracy award?

A: The accuracy medal is the hardest one to earn. I'm not sure if there's a set percentage or not. I think you need to have at least 75% accuracy, while
being signifficantly more accurate than your opponents. Another thing that makes it tough to earn, is that the accuracy medal is only awarded when you're playing with at least one other human player.

Q: I found out yesterday of possibly the name behind Cassandra De Vries. I was reading a book on evolution and it said someone called Hugo De Vries and he found that mutating in DNA courses animals & plants to survive through different conditions, so that is the name they(RARE) used for her.

A: It's believed that Joanna Dark's name comes Joan d'arc; The french translation for Joan of Ark. And, everyone knows where Elvis' name is from... So, I wouldn't be surprised if Rare based names for other characters on other existing names.

Q: In the combat simulator, what is the difference between slow motion set to on, and slow motion set to smart?

A: By setting slow motion to 'smart', the action will only be slow when players are within range of each other. This lets you move quickly to your opponents, but the slow motion will kick in once you get close. Basically, it helps speed up your game, so the action isn't slow when players are far apart.

Q: I bought PD and tho I plan to get one I dont have an expansion pak and I also have noticed that i cant pick my characters in multiplayer (E.G.body,head) is this because I don't have an expansion pak. The instruction booklet doesn't say...and its killing me!

A: Without an Expansion Pak, the game is really limited. In addition to having small screens for 2 player combat, you can't even choose your own characters, or the characters of the computer simulants. So, that's a yes to your question.

Q: In perfect head mode, instead of putting your face in the game, can you put pictures of items into the game???

A: Although the PercectHead feature has long since been removed from the game, you could have used anything on your face map. It was intended for human faces though, so I'm sure that many objects wouldn't have displayed properly. I believe that Nintendo Power magazine even made a comment about using the face of your pet bird.

Q: What's the difference between the disabled and nothing weapon choices in multiplayer? Isn't disabled the same thing as having nothing?

A: If you set a weapon choice to 'Disabled', it will automatically set itself to one of the other weapons that you've already chosen. For example, if you want to play with only three guns, set three of the six weapons to those guns. Then, set the remaining three weapons to 'Disabled', and they will be set to the three weapons that have already been selected.

Q: How can you earn more than one star for the combat simulator challenges? I've earned two stars for some of the challenges, but I can't figure out how I did it.

A: The Combat Simulator Challenge stars just indicate how many human players you've completed the challenge with. If you completed a challenge while going solo, the first star will be filled in. If you finish the challenge with four human players, the fourth star will be filled in as well.

Q: What's your fave multiplayer map? I think Fortress is the best.

A: Well, my absolute favorite is the Facility, but of the "Dark" arenas, I would say that the Sewers, Fortress, and Skedar are my favorites.

Q: Why does Elvis always blast a dookie on my new boots? I mean come on...Its like every time i turn around, the little ass-booger is dropping his friends on my shiny new kicks. Please tell me why he does this.

A: You seem to be suffering from episodes of delusion. I would suggest searching your house for possible gas fume leaks...

Q: On most PD beta pictures, there is a vertical bar on the top right of the screen, what was it for?

A: Although I'm not 100% sure, I would guess that it's the health bar.

Q: I'm confused... Are there three special missions, or four?

A: There are technically four special missions: Mr. Blonde's Revenge, Maian SOS, and War. The fourth is earned after earning all Gold medals on the firing range, and the level is called "The Duel".

Q: I think you should make a part of your site for the Perfect Dark on Game Boy Color.

A: I would make a section for it, but I don't own the game, nor do I even own a Game Boy. If I did, then you can be sure I would have sections for it, complete with screenshots.

Q: Can you get mixed weapons in Perfect Dark, like you could in Goldeneye?

A: No, not to my knowledge. That feature was actually nothing more than just a cool glitch.

Q: How to play co-op with more then 1 simulant please help me.

A: If you complete all the co-operative missions on Agent difficulty, you'll be allowed to have 2 co-op buddies on Agent. If you finish the missions on higher difficulty levels, you'll be able get more friends to help you out.

Q: If you go to www.carrington institute.com it actually looks like the place is real . There is a link on that site that says agents only if you go there it asks you for a username and password. A username and password you can use on the site.
username: solaris
password: pal32ver21z

A: That Username solaris, and password pal32ver21z work on the CI site. Oddly enough they're not found anywhere in the game.

Q: Hi. Whenever I play co-op mode with a human player, the player is always Velvet Dark. Even if I change her to someone else in the buddies cheats options. Is there a way to have your second player not be Velvet?

A: No, unfortunately there isn't. While playing the missions in Co-Operative mode, player two can only be Velvet Dark, and none of the Buddies that you've earned. This is probably for one reason- End level movie scenes. If Velvet Dark exits the level before Jo, she'll be featured in the cinema scene. She'll act like Jo, and even talk like her. But characters in the scene never refer to her as Joanna, only Agent Dark. This works for both Joanna and Velvet. But if you exited the level with, say, the Alien, we would complain, because Joanna would have to be seen in the cinema scene, or have a really messed up scene with an Alien speaking like a human female.

Q: I think you should make walk throughs on how to get all of the cheats in the game.

A: I was hoping to make pages for getting each cheat to go along side my mission walkthrus. But making walkthrus takes time, and I was planning to add the cheat walkthrus only after I completed the normal walkthrus. But many cheats I've earned ages ago, and I forget most of the strategies and methods that I used to get the cheats. Most weren't that hard though, you just need to find the fastest and most efficient way to beat the level. (I know that's the whole point to earning the cheats, but hey…)

Q: Is it possible to name the Simulants in multiplayer? The names change in the challenges, but when I play normally, I can't choose a name other than Meatsim1 and names like that.

A: To my knowledge, you can't choose names for your Simulants. I think it would be cool, but it's not possible unless you edit their name with the Gameshark Memory Editor.

The strange thing is, you can edit the names of the teams... And when you play the challenges, the Simulants each have different names... (JoSim, BlondeSim, ShockSim, ect.)

Q: What are the Solo Mission levels in order from easiest to hardest on Perfect Agent?

A: Most players have their own opinions on how difficult a level is, and it depends on individual player skills. In my opinion, here are the regular missions in rough order of difficulty on Perfect Agent, from easiest to hardest:

1. dataDyne Defection
2. Carrington Villa
3. dataDyne Investigation
4. dataDyne Extraction
5. G5 Building Reconnaissance
6. Chicago Stealth
7. Crash Site Confrontation
8. Air Force One Anti-Terrorism
9. Carrington Institute Defense
10. A51 Infiltration
11. A51 Rescue
12. A51 Escape
13. Air Base Espionage
14. Deep Sea Nullify Threat
15.Pelagic II
16. Skedar Ruins
17. Attack Ship

Q: What is the beta version and where can I buy it?

A: Contrary to popular belief, the term "beta" doesn't refer to a separate version of the game at all. The "beta" stage of any game, is where changes are still being made to it. Many promotional screenshots are taken at this stage, and when the final game is released, we notice a few differences. Perect Dark didn't have as many visible changes to it as Goldeneye did, but it did have some. Perfect Dark games from the "beta" stages probably exist at Rareware, but they would never be sold. To add to that, they would not even be playable on your Nintendo 64. "Beta" information is very interesting, as we like to see how the game has changed throughout the course of development. Many things end up being removed from games, simply because of problems and glitches that can't be fixed.

Q: Where is the Facility level in the multiplayer game? I can't find it.

A: It's actually a hidden level that you can earn as well as two other 'classic' levels. You can earn the Facility by completing 12 of the Combat Simulator's preset challenges. Once you do that, you will have access to the Goldeneye Facility level, which has been renamed 'Felicity'.
